Hog Roast Scams on the Increase

The past two years has had its fair share of scammers and caterers going bust, leaving a trail of disappointment, debt, and unhappiness along the way.

We are contacted on a weekly basis to assist abandoned and let down customers. It's extra business for us, but very sad and irritating that unscrupulous individuals seem to get away with effectively stealing other people's money! What should have been a happy experience for party organisers and wedding couples turns out to be their worst nightmare.

Jason Myers (pictured right) AKA Jay, and his accomplice for two years (Claire Irvine) scammed thousands of pounds from wedding clients who thought they would get a cheap hog roast. Myers MO was to quote really low prices and ask for a small deposit by cash, cheque or PayPal. Stories of horrific car accidents we banded around by Irvine, when the truth was probably Myers and Irvine were counting the loot.

You can read up on their antics on the Can You Trust Them website or on The Review website. Fortunately we managed to get a photo of Myers so look out !

Every week we hear from people deperate to find a caterer that can fill in after being "let down". So we have put together some tips on how to avoid getting scammed or caught by Limited Companies going into liquidation.

Here are some simple rules to follow:-

  1. Only pay an advance booking deposit with a Credit or Debit Card, never CASH.
  2. If you pay over £100.00 deposit on a card. the whole transaction is guaranteed, Section 75
  3. Don’t send a deposit cheque unless you are convinced the people you deal with are okay.
  4. Never pay by PayPal, Myers uses PayPal.
  5. Don’t do business with people that just use answer phones or voice mail.
  6. Ask to go around to their commercial unit to see if they exist.
  7. Check their food preparation facilities are likely not to give you, or your guests food poisoning.
  8. Ask to come and inspect their meat storage refrigeration facilities.
  9. If they don’t have a fridge van they are probably operating illegally.
  10. Ignore fancy websites, they can be purchased cheaply and often contain other bona fide caterer's text and photographs.
  11. If all else fails give me a call, I might be able to help. You can get hold of me via my Contact Us page.

As the longest, most stable Hog Roast caterer in the UK we are grateful for all your enquiries. We can't accept telephone calls asking for quotes, we have had Online Quoting for the past 6 years. Quotes are automated and instant. We can't compete with one man bands who cut corners and supply low welfare meat. But we will give a like for like price match on any written quote.

For those of you that are looking to cater for events on a budget that can't run to a chef to carve and serve should review our DIY service which we pioneered some 10 years ago.

One thing to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. You can't get a cheap hog roast and catering without paying the going rate.

We rely on clients recognising value for money and the need to support British Free Range Pig Farms, not Low Welfare imported pork from the Eastern Block !
